Went ahead and tried to uninstall the wireless card again and it uninstalled too. I scanned for hardware changes in device manager, and it reinstalled both lan and wireless.
I was now able to disable the wireless card. Now restart and shutdown works fine. I would bet it would work right even if the wireless was not disabled, simply because you could both uninstall and disable the wireless card which you couldn't do before. Again the fix is to uninstall lan card first, then wireless card, and restart and shutdown work fine now.
Thank you so much this was exactly the problem I had. Aspire M froze during the upgrade and would reinstate the old version after failure and then ask to upgrade again. It was the network and wireless card. I removed the wireless card, the net card is built in so you so can't remove it. I went into device manager and removed the network card, and had to delete the drivers for the upgrade to work.
It was that driver causing the issue. I also displayed hidden entries and deleted the wireless card entries. Then I ran the upgrade and everything worked, the upgrade applied the correct driver to the card so everything was functional.
